Familiarity /
Long civilisational contact with a material can create the feeling that it is already understood. The conversation separates inherited familiarity from active knowledge: recognition of a medium's conventional forms is not the same as perceiving what else it can become.
Expert authority /
Education and specialist language condense valuable historical knowledge, yet they can also standardise perception. When expertise claims the right to decide what a material should be, difference appears irrational before it is examined.
Novelty as method /
Ceramics is treated not as a closed tradition but as one historically accumulated mode among many possible material expressions. Novelty matters because it tests the limits of recognition and reopens questions that familiarity has made invisible.
